Job Description

Lancaster University Students’ Union are now recruiting for the Solutions Team 2019-20!

The Solutions Team are the friendly faces at the Students’ Union Welcome Desk, and your role will be to provide the vital initial point of contact for members and visitors.

Hours will be variable, ranging from 4-8 hours per week during term times but with some increases and decreases across the year. You must be available to work substantial hours through arrivals weekend and Welcome Week (30th September to 6th October), and there is an introductory training session for the successful candidates on Friday 27th September.

Major Duties

  • Staffing the Welcome Desk to deal with student and visitor queries in person, by telephone, via email and social media
  • Providing excellent customer service at the Welcome Desk, including information on the services of the union and the university, giving students and visitors the appropriate course of action
  • Handling a variety of transactions, including cash sales in an appropriate, and where necessary confidential, manner using set procedures, guidelines and systems
  • Providing administrative support for union staff and officers including minute taking
  • Being an ambassador for the union, promoting its ethos, opportunities and services at events
  • Working as part of a team to support regular event activity including setting up and packing down of equipment
  • Upholding the union’s environmental, sustainable and ethical policies and to carry out any such other comparable duties as may be directed by the Chief Executive or their representative

Person Specification

  • Experience in a customer-facing environment/cash handling would be an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Good knowledge of the union and the university
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Good organisational, time management skills, and problem solving abilities
  • Good communication – confident, friendly and articulate speaker & listener
  • Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work on individual basis and as part of a team
  • IT Literate: competent at using Word / basic Excel / internet / email
  • Flexibility: demonstrate how flexible you are and how you would intend to manage study with work
  • Appropriate appearance for the working environment in the union
  • A second language would be an advantage to your application, but is not essential
