Job Description
The Global Summer Schools offer interactive learning experiences for international students from universities worldwide, with classes and field trips during the day, social activities in the evenings, and weekend trips around the UK.
Details about the Summer Schools:
Job Title:  Global Summer School Assistants
Number of posts:  2
Rate of Pay:  £8.21 + holiday pay = £9.20 per hour
Working dates:  1 July – 4 October 2019. Successful candidates must be available to work flexible hours including daytime, evenings and weekends on a rotational shift basis. Work will be full time during some weeks of the programmes. Hours will be agreed with candidates individually.
Interviews:  Expected to take place on Monday 13 May 2019.
  • Be the first point of contact for visiting students and staff
  • Lead team building activities, motivating, enthusing, and engaging groups of international students in the course activities
  • Encourage interaction between students from various countries
  • Supervise students during field trips, city and overnight stays across the UK, and take part in activities
  • Guide students to sessions according to their schedule
  • Assist in the coordination and delivery of evening and weekend activities, including moving furniture in event set up/down
  • Ensure the student activities run according to schedule by checking booking details, phoning travel and accommodation companies, and liaising with team members especially when working off Lancaster campus
  • Provide administrative support such as photocopying and filing paperwork, recording student attendance, keeping student records and class materials up-to-date, using Microsoft Office, inputting data, packing welcome packs, checking IT equipment in classrooms, attending staff meetings etc.
  • Travel to the sites of the programmes in UK towns and stay for multiple nights in accommodation provided, supporting the daily activities of the programmes
  • Assist the Global Experiences Officer, Academic Director, Academic Coordinators, and Administrator, in further appropriate duties during busy periods



  • GCSE or equivalent pass in English and Maths
  • Can use standard computer software (Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel)
  • Has excellent communication skills in face-to-face, electronic, telephone and written communications, including the ability to communicate information clearly to people when English is not their first language.
  • Ability and willingness to motivate and support students during academic and extra-curricular sessions
  • Shows an interest in working in a multicultural environment and can adapt to working with a range of people on a range of tasks
  • Can plan and run events, with ability to prioritise workload and work on own initiative
  • Can travel within the UK for overnight stays of up to one week


  • Experience of working in higher education and/or with international students
  • Can keep documents, office supplies and equipment organised, including lifting and carrying equipment and supplies
