Job Description
Lancaster University Examinations Office is currently recruiting examination invigilators for the main summer exam period, which runs from late-April to mid-June 2019.
For this particular role we are looking for invigilators to work with students with adapted exam requirements – this will primarily involve invigilating individual students on a one-to-one basis, or invigilating a small group of students who require access to a computer.

Working Pattern:    Flexible, part-time up to full-time hours depending on availability
Mandatory Training Event:   11th April 2019



  • Collection from the Exams Office of examination papers and any other material required to set up the exam.
  • Starting the examination promptly.
  • Invigilating the examination, monitoring for irregularities.
  • Apply examination policies and procedures in order to manage each exam effectively.
  • Dealing with problems and queries in accordance with set guidelines.
  • Collection of scripts at the end of the exam and delivering them to the Exams Office.
  • Ensuring the security of the exam material at all times.

Working pattern:

Exams occur over two sessions per day, Monday to Saturday.  The invigilation required for each session varies from one-and-a-half hours to five hours.  Invigilators are expected to collect exam materials from the Exams Office at 9 a.m. for the morning session or 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon session (examinations start at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively).  Applicants must be available for a minimum of two sessions per week.  Hours are variable and cannot be guaranteed above the minimum application requirement.

Pay rate:

The standard invigilation pay rate is £9.69 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay).  Claimable hours include both time taken to set up the exam and time taken to return exam materials to the Exams Office.

Hours are claimed via submission of weekly timesheets; however, pay is received monthly towards the end of each month.

Person specification:

Applicants are expected to possess the following attributes:

  • Utmost reliability and punctuality
  • Ability to work to defined procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A sympathetic approach to dealing with issues in a sensitive yet firm manner.
  • Ability to maintain focus for a number of hours.
  • Excellent command of the English language

No prior experience is required, however returning applicants with previous invigilation experience will be prioritised.

These positions are not open to current Lancaster Undergraduate (UG) or Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students but we welcome applications from Postgraduate Research (PGR) students.           

New applicants will be required to attend a paid training session on April 11th 2019 and to complete an online assessment following the event.  Returning applicants wishing to refresh on procedures are welcome to attend the training session.
