Job Description

Do you have the passion to deliver the award winning Green Lancaster ‘Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It’ waste elimination project at Lancaster University? You must have an enthusiastic approach to environmental sustainability and the waste reduction agenda. The role will involve working with other team members to deliver the Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It project this summer. Team members will work closely with the Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It Project Supervisor and the Green Lancaster Coordinator to ensure the project runs smoothly. Starting with promotion of the project, tasks will focus on the operation of the project at the donation and collection points around campus. Team members will be responsible for encouraging students to donate unwanted items, collections and monitoring of donations and working with local charity partners.

During peak operation, the team members will be required to work up to 20 hours per week. There is an opportunity for some team members to work beyond Friday 13th July 2018 through to 28th September 2018. We are seeking some candidates who are able to drive a small utility van for the project (requirement is 21 years or older with a clean drivers’ license). This is not a compulsory requirement of the role.


Purpose of Job

To work on the ‘Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It’ project team and deliver the project for summer 2018.

 Major Duties:

 1.        Work with other team members and the Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It’ Project Supervisor(s) to promote the project to all students on campus. Communicate the existence of the scheme along with what can/cannot be donated. Promote the benefits of the project in terms of diversion of waste from landfill and benefits to charity partners.

2.        Provide safe assistance to residents in the sorting of items donated to the project at the dedicated collection and sorting stations across campus.

3.        Assisting charity partners with collections of pre-sorted donations at the main sorting base.                                                              

4.        Monitoring and recording levels of donations on specific forms.

5.        To follow the Dont.Ditch.It.Donate.It’ Project Safe System of Work and Manual Handling Guidelines during all practical work on the project.

6.        Other comparable duties as designated by the line manager.

7.        To uphold the students’ union environmental, sustainable and ethical policies and to carry out any such other comparable duties as may be directed by the Chief Executive or their representative.

Preferred start date 30/5/2018. Compulsory training will take place on Thursday 31st May, 09:00 – 16:00.


A placement start date during week commencing 18th June (teaching week 9, summer term) will be acceptable for those with exam commitments. An alternative training date will be offered in this case. 


To: there are two possible placement end dates available: 13/7/2018 or 28/09/2018 depending on availability and summer plans of the successful applicants.

Salary £7.87 plus holiday pay, total £8.82 per hour
