Lancaster University Students’ Union is recruiting team members to facilitate the Schools Go Green project during the Summer Term of the 2017-18 academic year. The successful candidate will lead delivery of the inspiration days and form part of a wider Green Lancaster team leading on positive environmental and sustainability projects to local schools. Green Lancaster is a collaborative initiative between Lancaster University and Lancaster University Students’ Union aiming to create positive action on energy, waste, transport and food issues. Schools Go Green is the thriving Students’ Union youth engagement project focusing on sustainable food and energy.

Schools Go Green project team members will be responsible for the facilitation of the Schools Go Green Project on the ground. Typical weekly duties will include delivering weekly inspiration days to local schools children, attending, team meetings, undertaking preparation at the EcoHub and project administration tasks. We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate strong leadership skills. You may have pre-existing knowledge of Green Lancaster Projects, Students’ Union Schools Projects and/or highly transferrable skills from a similar environmental project elsewhere.

Purpose of Job

To promote students’ union contributions to Environmental Sustainability and the values associated to this. The Schools Go Green Team Leader will specifically facilitate the delivery of the schools inspiration day outreach programme.

Major Duties:

1.        To lead the Schools Go Green Team project, working with the Development Manager and Opportunity Co-Ordinator through the planning of the Schools Go Green Project and supporting Team Members to deliver the project.


2.        To be an ambassador for food and environmental sustainability at Lancaster University.


3.        To attend a regular meeting with the line manager (Green Lancaster Co-ordinator or Edible Campus Project Supervisor).


4.        To work within pre-planned operational or office based shifts to undertake all aspects of work assigned. Working hours will be an average of 8 hours per week.


5.        To operate within the remit of the Safe System of Work and Manual Handling arrangements for Lancaster University Students’ Union and Green Lancaster practical projects and events.


6.        The Schools Go Green Team will facilitate weekly school inspiration days Monday and Thursday. Candidates will need to be available between 9:00 and 2:30 on Monday’s and/or Thursday’s during term-time.


7.        To uphold the Union’s environmental, sustainable and ethical policies and to carry out any such other comparable duties as may be directed by the Chief Executive or their representative.

Personal Specification:


Previous experience of working with children and young people                                Essential

Previous experience of leading environmental projects                                                Desirable

Excellent knowledge or understanding of environmental issues, Green                    Desirable

Lancaster and the Edible Campus project.
