Role & Department Overview

We are seeking a UGRC reviewer to join our team in preparation for UGRC 2027. This role sits within the Global Experiences team and will initially focus on supporting our application process, while also contributing to a wider portfolio of global opportunities delivered across the University.

This is an exciting opportunity for applicants looking to gain experience of working in a global team and supporting students participating in international programme. This varied and challenging role offers the opportunity to work closely with Online Learning Support Manager, Lancaster’s global partners and colleagues across the University.

We're looking for 4 or 5 temporary recruits to support the preparation and delivery of our Undergraduate Research Conference. This is a fantastic opportunity for you if you enjoy engaging with research ideas across a wide range of disciplines and want to develop skills in providing constructive feedback to emerging researchers.

Preferred Start Date: To Be Confirmed
Expected End Date: 5th March 2027
Working Pattern: Around 20-30 hours of work across the term of employment.
Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus

Job Description

What you'll be doing:

  • Reading and providing written feedback on abstracts and presentation proposals submitted by undergraduate students hoping to present at the conference or include a poster showcasing their research.
  • Checking posters from both presenters and non-presenters ahead of the conference.
  • Supporting the online conference on the day, in whatever capacity is needed; this may include helping engage guests through the chat function.

Person Specification

What we're looking for:

  • A genuine interest in research across different subject areas, and confidence making sense of ideas outside your own specialism
  • An interest in nurturing and supporting the development of future researchers; feedback will be developmental in nature, aimed at helping students grow
  • Comfort reading a fairly high volume of text with a fairly quick turnaround for providing feedback
  • Clear, effective (English language) written communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to be trained in reviewing and feedback, if this is new to you

A note on the role:

This role carries a genuine level of responsibility, particularly around reviewing abstracts and giving feedback. It calls for initiative and the confidence to offer constructive criticism. Past recruits have found this one of the most rewarding aspects of the role. You'll participate in a dedicated training session online, and receive guidance and support throughout, so previous experience with reviewing or conference work isn't essential -  just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. The role can be undertaken entirely remotely and collaboration with the UGRC team will be through online video conferencing and chat functions (Microsoft Teams) and email.
