Role & Department Overview

‘Our Bay, Our Future’ is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and will provide access to new climate action projects for more than 5,000 local young people over the next four years. There are eight different programmes being offered by the four partners; Lancaster University, Lancaster & Morecambe College, Morecambe Bay Partnership and University of Cumbria. Each of the programmes is designed to grow the values, skills and knowledge needed to care for Morecambe Bay and secure local green jobs.

Green Action Facilitators will support these climate action opportunities to be fun and engaging for young people around the Bay. They will receive two days of paid training on how to work with young people, safeguarding, coaching and enabling climate action delivered by experts, as well as monthly opportunities to meet their fellow Green Action Facilitators. Following this, Green Action Facilitators will be able to sign up for paid shifts across the following ‘Our Bay, Our Future’ programmes run by both Morecambe Bay Partnership and Lancaster & Morecambe College; Green Connections, Green Researcher’s Badge, Green Futures Award and Green Leaders (further details of each programme are available on the website).

Examples of the shifts that will be available for Green Action Facilitators:

  • Supporting delivery of sessions in school and the wider community that focus on engaging children and young people (3-19) with climate action opportunities in exciting and engaging ways.
  • Working intensively alongside and coaching students and young people who are 16+ from the Morecambe Bay area, encouraging them to try new things and to develop their own knowledge of sustainability through implementing their own project in the locality.
  • Help set up the ‘Ripple Effects’ photography competition, encouraging young people to engage with the bodies of water around them, reflecting on what it means to them. This would include promoting the competition as well as facilitating photography sessions for young people.
  • Support administration, coordination, marketing and promotion and practitioners to bring ‘Our Bay, Our Future’ to life.

Job Description

Green Action Facilitators will have a responsibility to promote sustainable living and enable climate action opportunities, as well as ensure that all children and young people who engage with ‘Our Bay, Our Future’ are protected and safe. The exact responsibilities will depend on the work shifts signed up for and can include:

  • Supporting Green Connections, Green Researcher’s Badge and Green Futures Award delivery: The role holder will provide practical support to practitioners and partners to help ensure indoor and outdoor activities are engaging, well organised, inclusive and aligned with the aims of ‘Our Bay, Our Future’.
  • Mentoring Green Leaders: The key responsibility is to support the programme participants who may be working on individual projects or group projects, to promote their confidence and help them to develop their skills as leaders, planners and communicators. The participants may choose very different projects, for example working with a primary school to develop a good growing area, holding an exhibition of local conservation work or creating a game to educate others about climate change. You may support one or more individual participants or work with a small group.
  • Administrative support of ‘Our Bay, Our Future’ programmes: Supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of off-campus activities for children and young people across Morecambe Bay; liaising with schools, community partners and delivery organisations; assisting with administration, scheduling, communications and promotional activity; preparing resources and supporting sessions; and contributing to evaluation, feedback gathering and ongoing development of the programme.

Person Specification

Essential:

  1. Current Lancaster University or University of Cumbria student. Must be available to work in 2026/27 academic year and have the right to work in the UK.
  2. Some prior knowledge and passion for sustainability and/or climate action.
  3. Interest in working with children, young people and communities.
  4. Excellent communication skills and able to effectively build relationships with a wide range of people.
  5. Good timekeeping skills and able to meet strict deadlines.
  6. Able to work independently with the minimum of supervision.
  7. Accurate, organised and reliable.

Desirable:

  1. Previous experience of working with young people and/or environmental education.
  2. Can act as a  relatable role model for young people who might not think that taking climate action or going to university is for them. 
  3. Experience of working as part of a team.
  4. Enthusiastic, energetic, flexible and supportive of teammates.
  5. Able to handle multiple tasks and stay calm under pressure.
