LMS Research Internship: Towards a Shared Ethics of Transition: A Comparative Review Across Health, Social Care and Education 

Please note: this internship is only available to current undergraduate students in Lancaster University Medical School.

This internship is offered as part of an exciting pilot of research opportunities for Medical School undergraduate students (MBChB and SaES). Each internship will be supervised by an academic member of staff. These opportunities are designed to give students experience of contributing to university research. These internships would be ideal for students considering postgraduate study, intercalated degrees or specialised foundation programmes.

Project Summary:

Where ethical analysis of healthcare transition exists, transition is framed as a morally significant process where ethically grounded frameworks provide continuity, protect emerging autonomy, and acknowledge interdependence as opposed to independence.

This internship will undertake a cross-sector comparative review of the literature examining the ethical framing of transition across health, social care, and education. The aim is to identify any common ethical considerations across sectors, and uncover unifying principles that drive transition frameworks across those sectors.

This project will undertake a structured narrative review of the literature examining how transition is ethically conceptualised across health, social care, and education. A systematic search of relevant databases will be conducted to identify studies, papers, and ethical analyses relating to transition. This will be supplemented by targeted searches of grey literature, including policy, professional guidance, and reports, to capture influential frameworks that may not be represented within the academic literature.

This is a timely piece of work given the increasing emphasis on cross-sector working, and in particular, the focus on better multi-agency approaches to supporting young people in transition to adult services. Uncovering shared principles helps to identify where stakeholders, sectors, and agencies already align, and may support service design around shared values.

Weekly hours: 5 hours per week for 16 weeks
 
Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus

Job Description

The successful applicant will:

  • To work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary academic environment, engaging with themes across children’s health, health policy, and medical ethics.
  • To work closely with a supervisor to undertake a structured narrative review of literature and grey literature.
  • To undertake a systematic search of relevant databases to identify studies, papers, and ethical analyses relating to transition across education, health and social care and write short synopses that will form part of at least one publishable manuscript.
  • To find relevant grey literature, including policy, professional guidance and reports, and write short synopses that will form part of at least one publishable manuscript.
  • To develop skills in information synthesis from diverse sources, including grey literature and survey data, critical appraisal of this material, academic writing and report generation, time management and independent project planning, and communication skills.

Person Specification

Applicants should have good organisational skills, and academic experience in the following (consistent with having completed SSM2) :

  • Attend supervisory meetings
  • Develop plan of work
  • Devise search terms and complete literature review
  • Record and present findings clearly
  • Scope to develop written review
