Role & Department Overview

LUMS Leading Lights Mentor: supporting students to develop effective academic skills.

We are welcoming applications from second and final year undergraduate students to join our team of LUMS Leading Lights mentors for the next academic year (2026-2027).

LUMS Leading Lights (LLL) mentors support incoming LUMS students to successfully transition to academic life. New students and LUMS Leading mentors are matched and meet at regular intervals throughout the academic year to work on developing effective study practices and academic skills. The mentor role involves organising and facilitating these small group study sessions, based upon a set of learning materials pre-prepared by the Learning Development (LD) team. Additionally, mentors have the opportunity to design and lead study skills workshops and drop-ins open to the broader LUMS student population with support from the LUMS Undergraduate Learning Developer. Alongside this, mentors have the opportunity to get involved with the creation of social media content and academic resources.

Successful applicants must have a commitment to share their academic skills and experience, and ideal candidates will be approachable and reliable and help to build our LLL community.

As a part of your application, please submit a tailored CV and cover letter. Your cover letter should outline why you are applying for this role and how your experience and skills align with the job description and person specification. As this should be a personal reflection, we will not consider generic or AI-generated cover letters or CVs.

Should your application be successful, interviews will take place online in the week commencing 3rd August. Interview questions and tasks will be sent in advance. If successful at interview, we will require you to submit a reference from a member of staff who can vouch that you would be suitable for the role.

To apply you must be a second or final year LUMS undergraduate student studying at Lancaster University (Bailrigg campus) in the next academic year (2026-27).

Please direct any enquiries to Gill Smith at [email protected].
