Role & Department Overview

Information Systems Services (ISS) is seeking to appoint enthusiastic Windows 11 IT Engineers to work as part of its IT Engineer team to work on the Windows 11 deployment project at Lancaster University during the Summer as a fixed term role from July to September 2026.   This is a campus based role and applicants must be available during July, August and September.

As an IT Engineer you will be joining the IT teams who provide second-line technical support to users of the University’s IT services.  As part of the role, you will be deploying Windows 11 to a range of end point user devices providing user familiarisation with Windows 11, carrying out on-site technical and remote support to end users of Windows 11 and ensuring IT asset management systems are kept up to date. You will be responsible for arranging upgrade appointments with staff as well as dealing with enquiries related to the upgrade processes for Windows 11.

You will be required to use ITIL based processes in a wide variety of technical challenges, advice and preventative maintenance in support of the Universities Teaching, Research and administrative functions as we transition to Windows 11. This includes working alongside our AV services team with the support of IT and Audio-Visual equipment in a variety of learning spaces. The role will also work alongside the wider teams in ISS in helping support the delivery of new and existing services.   

An experience of working in a team-based IT service environment, as well as knowledge of PC and Audio-Visual systems in use at Higher Education or equivalent establishments will be advantageous. You will combine your IT and problem-solving skills with a strong user-focus to ensure an excellent service to the user community.   
The post will be normal business hours on campus, however on occasion there will be opportunities to undertake paid work outside those hours. The successful candidate will be offered the opportunity to undertake a variety of training options.

Job Description

Major Duties
 
  • Roll out of Windows 11 to Endpoint devices for the provision of Information Technology and Audio Visual support for staff and students;
  • Supporting the operation and development of the ISS Service Desk
  • Support for PC and AV equipment in PC Labs and teaching spaces to transition to Windows 11.
 
Major Responsibilities
General (part 1):
 
  • Identify commonly encountered user problems and work with ISS colleagues to address these at source.
  • Work to appropriate service levels with defined quality of service metrics that will enable ISS to maintain and demonstrate high quality of service provision.
 
Service Desk:
  • Support the day to day operation of the ISS Service Desk so that our users receive timely and actionable advice this includes updating Service Desk information sources, including finding and documenting solutions to known problems.
  • Take referrals from the Desk via information systems and also via mobile phone in the case of urgent problems, resolving problems and recording progress and outcomes in the Service Desk’s information systems.
  • Support the development and operation of the ISS Service Desk in the context of ISS’s services and compliance with ITIL best practices.
 
IT and AV Support:
  • Installation and maintenance of IT hardware and software
  • Installation and maintenance of Audio Visual, including video conference, equipment
  • Offer second-line user support in the use of IT and AV.
  • Fault diagnosis and subsequent resolution, referral and recording of outcomes
 
Professional Development:
  • To demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development.
 
General (part 2):
  •  To maintain high levels of professional conduct, including but not limited to, cooperative engagement in tasks set, the exercising of initiative to suggest through line mangers improvements to the service provided, and clear and professional styles of communication at all times.
  • To manage other activities that may become the responsibility of User Services through evolution, growth or restructuring.
  • Such duties appropriate to the grade as may be directed by the Director of Information Systems Services or nominated representative.

Person Specification

  • A general understanding of IT and AV systems specifically on those that may be used in a higher education contex
  • Experience and understanding from a support perspective of PC Platforms, AV and Video Conferencing Equipment,
  • Microsoft applications, operating systems and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience of working in a team based IT support environment and the application of ITIL like processes
  • Demonstrate logical and systematic problem solving skills and the ability to work under their own initiative
  • Ability to work, and communicate, effectively with staff at all levels of seniority and technical ability
  • Level 3 qualification, equivalent to at least 2 ‘A’ levels in an IT or related discipline
  • Demonstrate willingness to undertake continuing professional development
  • Experience of supporting the Apple Macintosh platform for client environments
  • Knowledge of managing IOS and Android devices
  • Knowledge of using linux client machines
