Role & Department Overview

The Students’ Union Events Team is responsible for planning and delivering a diverse programme of events that support student engagement, community, and belonging. Working closely with student groups, university departments, external partners, and internal SU services, the team delivers everything from Welcome Week and major annual events to society showcases, campaigns, and social activities. The department is collaborative, creative, and student‑focused, with a strong emphasis on providing inclusive, safe, and enjoyable experiences for all students. Events Crew Members are a key part of the team, providing essential operational support and helping bring events to life.

Job Description

The LUSU Crew Events Team Member plays a key role in the planning, promotion, and delivery of events and activities on campus. This position offers an opportunity to develop leadership, event management, and teamwork skills while enhancing the student experience for the broader campus community.
 
Event Delivery
  •  Set up event spaces including furniture, equipment, signage, and staging.
  • Support live events by assisting with crowd flow, queue management, and attendee guidance.
  • Provide friendly customer service to students, staff, visitors, and suppliers.
  • Assist with de‑rigs ensuring spaces are returned to their original condition.
  • Monitor event areas to maintain safety, accessibility, and a positive atmosphere.
 
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Follow safe working practices when moving equipment or working in busy environments.
  • Identify and report hazards to supervisors promptly.
  • Support crowd management during peak times or high‑footfall events.
  • Assist with emergency procedures when required, following staff direction.
 
Teamwork & Communication
  • Work collaboratively with other Crew Members, student groups, and SU staff.
  • Take instruction from senior staff and communicate clearly during set‑ups and live events.
  • Represent the Students’ Union professionally and positively at all times.
  
Operational Support
  • Assist with equipment handling including AV, lighting, and staging (training provided).
  •  Support event logistics such as deliveries, supplier coordination, and room checks.
  • Contribute ideas to improve event delivery and student experience.

Essential Criteria
  • Availability - Must be available to work in the academic year 2026/27
  • Communication skills — Able to communicate clearly and confidently with students, staff, suppliers, and event attendees.
  • Teamwork — Works effectively as part of a team, supporting others during busy or high‑pressure periods.
  • Reliability and punctuality — Consistently arrives on time, completes tasks as instructed, and follows agreed schedules.
  • Customer service — Friendly, approachable, and able to provide a positive experience for attendees.
  • Physical capability — Able to carry equipment, move furniture, and assist with event set‑ups and de‑rigs safely.
  • Problem‑solving — Able to stay calm and think clearly when unexpected issues arise.
  • Following instructions — Able to take direction from supervisors and work independently when required.
  • Awareness of health & safety — Understands the importance of safe working practices, crowd flow, and hazard awareness.
  • Flexibility — Willing to work evenings, weekends, and variable hours depending on event schedules.
  • Professionalism — Represents the Students’ Union positively and treats all students and colleagues with respect.
 
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in events — Previous involvement in events, hospitality, customer service, or student activities.
  • Technical skills — Basic understanding of AV equipment, lighting, sound desks, or staging.
  • First aid awareness — Basic first aid knowledge or willingness to undertake training.
  • Crowd management awareness — Understanding of queueing systems, entry/exit flow, and managing busy spaces.
  • Initiative — Spots issues early and takes appropriate action without always needing direction.
  • Knowledge of the Students’ Union — Understanding of SU services, student groups, and campus culture.
  • Creative input — Ability to contribute ideas to improve events, engagement, or atmosphere.
  • Leadership potential — Ability to support newer crew members or take responsibility for small tasks.
