Lakeland Arts is one of the North of England's premier arts and heritage organisations, operating key cultural venues: Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Blackwel the Arts & Crafts house, and Windermere Jetty Museum. Based in Kendal, Cumbria, it manages significant collections, exhibitions, and Grade 1 Listed sites, promoting regional heritage and art. 

This is a creative role and would suit someone who is interested in working as part of a design team and has some experience of drawing buildings using computational software. This is an opportunity for an intern to contribute to Lakeland Arts ongoing development project, liaise with key stakeholders and work with architects / academics in the School of Architecture. 

The project is undergoing an interesting period of development; Lakeland Arts are currently reviewing the brief and current master plan for the various buildings at their Abbot Hall site in Kendal. You will be making a real contribution towards the future development of a live project in the arts and culture sector.

Location: Hybrid remotely (in the UK) and on-site

Working Hours / Pattern:  70 hours in total, flexible by arrangement with host. 

Briefing 25th June; Site visit 20th July; Follow up meeting 29th July. Flexible, remote working all other times, with majority of output between 20th-31st July.

Job Description

  • Work with staff from the School of Architecture and Lakeland Arts 
  • Reviewing the current masterplan identifying specific areas of work  
  • Use of industry software CAD to input measurements and data 
  • Preparing 2D drawings from survey information 
  • Building a 3D computational model of part of an existing building 
  • Packaging the drawing information for an undergraduate studio project

Person Specification

- A current student registered on a degree scheme in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
- An interest and experience in computational drawing skills essential. 
- Proficiency in AutoCAD / SketchUp or other 3D CAD software. 
- Experience in measuring surveying buildings an advantage.
- Self-organisation - ability to plan and manage the project and own time.
- An ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- A good communicator – visual, written and oral.
