Role & Department Overview

The Don’t Ditch It (DDI) Project is a long-standing annual project at Lancaster University which aims to divert unwanted household items from disposal at the end of the academic year through the redistribution to charity partners and returning students.

As a Team Memeber, you'll help divert over 40 tonnes of unwanted household items from landfill, working with  over 80 local, national and international charity partners to reduce waste and give unwanted items a second lease of life.

This project is managed by the university’s Sustainability Team with support from the Facilities Division.

Preferred Start Date: 4th June 2026
Expected End Date: 31st July 2026

Location: On the Lancaster University Campus
Working Pattern: Variable Hours

Job Description

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work as part of a team to promote the project, encouraging students to donate unwanted items.
  • Assist in the collection, sorting and recording of donations at designated collection sites, such as the Eco-Hub.
  • Support charity partners in collecting sorted items.
  • Help operate the Eco-Market, engaging with students to redistribute upcycled goods.
  • Follow Health & Safety guidelines, including manual handling protocols.
  • Attend project training and induction sessions.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • This position is open to current Lancaster University students who are studying towards or have completed a degree (or equivalent).
  • An interest in sustainability
  • Reliable, punctual and pro-active.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Available for summer term and ideally part of vacation.
  • Previous involvement in the Don’t Ditch It project
  • A UK driving license (for applicants aged 21 or over).
