This internship is offered as part of an exciting programme of work placement opportunities for UK undergraduate students who meet widening participation criteria. The internship will be supervised by Dr Lisa Ashmore in Lancaster Medical School. The opportunities is designed to give the appointee experience of work placement and contributing to university research.
In September 2022, the Gynae Narratives team launched their book aiming to improve experiences of radiotherapy for people having treatment for gynaecological cancer. The book has been shared widely amongst clinical teams and patients and the work has been the basis for a number of awards for the team. However, we do not have any data or evidence captured that helps us understand its reach.
In this micro internship, the successful candidate will work with the data collected when people ordered the book in order to understand who ordered it and their motivations for doing so. They will also be involved in designing a survey to send to readers who have agreed to be contacted to follow up how they have used or shared the book.
Working with the collected survey data, the intern will be encouraged to write a blog for dissemination about the reach and impacts of the Gynae Narratives book, including who ordered the book, how it has been used in practice to change care for people receiving treatment for gynaecological cancer and other reactions to it.
The intern will gain experience of working in an award winning, multi-professional team in the area of health and social care that will be transferable to future job applications.

Our work focuses on understanding how health, illness and care are shaped by social, organisational and policy contexts, with a strong emphasis on equity, lived experience and place-based insight. We work closely with NHS partners, policymakers, third-sector organisations and communi7es to ensure our research is grounded in real-world practice and patient needs.
