External Relations Student Ambassador Leader 2026/27 

 

 Become a Lancaster Student Ambassador Leader! We are now recruiting for our 2026/27 Student Ambassador Leaders (SALs) and are inviting all current students, both UG and PG, to apply for a place on the SAL team. 

 

Job Title: Student Ambassador Leader  

Salary: £13.21 plus £1.59 holiday pay (£14.80 per hour) 

Department: External Relations 

Directly responsible to: Student Staff Manager 

Start Date: 1st June 2026 

End Date: 30th September 2027 

 

Interview: Interviews are to be held on 18th May.  

Location: You will be based on campus 

Work pattern: Variable. You will be expected to work at least one shift (approx. 4 hours) each week in the Welcome Centre - SAL’s usually work 2 shifts week as a guide. You also have the option to sign up for other Student Ambassador shifts throughout the year.

About the Role 

In this exciting opportunity of joining our Student Ambassador Leader team, you’ll build on the responsibilities of a traditional Student Ambassador and also take on a pivotal role of being front of house in the Welcome Centre. You will represent our institution, engage with prospective students, and be a vital part of building our Student Ambassador community. In addition to the usual Student Ambassador activities, your responsibilities will also include supervising Ambassadors during shifts, providing administrative support for the Student Staff Manager and the wider External Relations team, playing a key role in the delivery of Ambassador training sessions and leading teams of Ambassadors at student recruitment events on campus. You will be joining the External Relations (ER) Events team, who lead activities such as the Open Day events, Offer Holder Events, International Student Arrivals, Campus Tours and online outreach activities. There are also opportunities to work with other departments across the University on an ad-hoc basis.  

This role is open to all students. You don’t need to have been a Student Ambassador in the External Relations team prior to this. 

 

Successful candidates must be available to attend a SAL training day in June and September (date and time TBC), as well as the Student Ambassador training day on Saturday 6th June 2026.  

 

You must also be available to work 3 out of the 4 Undergraduate Open Days on the following dates*:

  • Saturday 27th June 2026
  • Saturday 11th July 2026
  • Saturday 12th September 2026
  • Saturday 17th October 2026

We will try our best to allocate you to your 3 preferred dates, however, this may not be possible due to availability.  

 

*For any dates not in term time, we are able to cover travel and may also be able to provide accommodation when needed.

Your main responsibilities will be to

  • Represent Lancaster University to the highest possible standard, engage with prospective students, and be a vital part of our campus community
  • Supervise and support Student Ambassadors during shifts. Consistently deliver outstanding service for visitors, lead by example and encourage the Ambassador team to do the same
  • Provide excellent customer service whilst managing the reception of the Welcome Centre, dealing with student and visitor queries, whether face to face, by telephone, email or web
  • Provide administrative support for the Student Staff Manager and the wider External Relations team
  • Coach and assess ambassadors on their ability to deliver great quality campus tours, as well as delivering your own outstanding campus tours to prospective students and other visitors
  • Represent your course and the wider University as a ‘Unibuddy’
  • Host and deliver student life webinars, participate in online events such as live stream campus tours and take part in student Q&A sessions
  • Monitor various central email accounts, responding to emails and setting up ad hoc tours for International and UK students where required
  • Play a key role in the delivery of Student Ambassador training
  • Attend compulsory training sessions and SAL monthly meetings
  • Ensure areas of the Welcome Centre are kept clean and tidy at all times
  • Assist with any other duties as may reasonably be required by the Student Staff Manager

Person Specification

Education
  • You must be registered as a current Lancaster University degree student and be primarily based at the Bailrigg campus for the 2025/26 academic year (Essential)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Desire and ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Excellent use of initiative, able to solve problems and think creatively
  • Engaging personality and ability to communicate with a diverse range of people and ages
  • Excellent knowledge of Lancaster University, including campus, systems, facilities and student life
  • Comfortable with delivering presentations and public speaking, including delivering presentations via online platforms
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular use of Teams, Word, Excel, email

  • Experience of working in a customer-facing environment and providing excellent customer service
  • Experience supervising and/or mentoring others and providing advice and guidance
  • Strong leadership skills, including ability to delegate, use initiative and motivate others
