Role & Department Overview

Tutor Doctor Lancaster & Morecambe is an approved provider of Alternative Provision (AP) through Westmorland and Furness Council, supporting children and young people who are currently unable to access mainstream education.

We deliver personalised, one-to-one tutoring programmes designed to re-engage learners with education, rebuild confidence, and support academic progress in a safe and consistent environment.

Our students range from primary age through to GCSE level (up to age 16), and may present with:

Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs

School refusal or anxiety

Behavioural challenges or exclusion

Gaps in education or disrupted schooling

Tutoring is delivered in the learner’s home or a suitable agreed setting, typically for 10 hours per week per student, with flexible scheduling depending on the child and family circumstances.

We are continuously recruiting high-quality tutors to join our team so we can respond quickly to new referrals across the region.

Job Description

Role Purpose

To deliver high-quality, one-to-one tuition that supports both the academic progress and personal development of learners in Alternative Provision. This is not a traditional teaching role — success in this position comes from building trust, adapting to each learner, and creating a calm, structured environment where the student can re-engage with learning.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver 1:1 tuition (typically 10 hours per week per student) in line with agreed learning plans
  • Adapt teaching approaches to suit individual needs, interests, and learning styles
  • Support core subjects (primarily English and Maths), with additional subjects where appropriate
  • Build strong, professional relationships with learners who may have had negative experiences of education
  • Create a safe, consistent, and engaging learning environment
  • Manage behaviour calmly and effectively using a relational approach
  • Provide session feedback and progress updates as required
  • Maintain safeguarding awareness and follow all safeguarding procedures
Work independently while representing Tutor Doctor professionally in the community.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Experience working with children or young people (education, youth work, coaching, mentoring, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport quickly
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learners
  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Access to transport (highly desirable due to varied locations)
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential for most placements due to the varied locations of our students

Desirable (but not essential)

Teaching qualification (QTS, PGCE) or tutoring experience

Experience working with:

  • SEMH needs
  • Autism / ADHD
  • Excluded or disengaged learners
  • Experience delivering GCSE content
  • Safeguarding training

Experience & Suitability

Due to the nature of the role and the needs of the young people we support, this position would particularly suit individuals with:

  • A high level of personal maturity and emotional resilience
  • Experience working with children or young people in a professional or responsible capacity
  • The confidence to work independently in 1:1 environments

This role may be especially well suited to:

  • Experienced tutors or teachers
  • Graduates, postgraduates, or mature students
  • Individuals with backgrounds in education, youth work, psychology, or support roles
