Role & Department Overview

The Student Ambassador Programme is a strategic initiative designed to enhance student recruitment, outreach, and engagement across the School of Mathematical Sciences. By sharing authentic experiences of university life, ambassadors help prospective students and their supporters make informed choices and feel part of the Lancaster community before they even arrive on campus. 

As a Student Ambassador, you will represent your department at a range of events and activities, acting as a positive role model for Lancaster University. You will support recruitment, outreach, and marketing initiatives, while gaining valuable personal and professional development experience

 

Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour plus £1.47 holiday pay

Start Date: 23rd March 2026

End Date: 30th September 2026

Job Description

Student Ambassadors serve across multiple activity areas, depending on availability and timetables. Duties include:

Recruitment Events
 
  • Represent the Faculty at Open Days (summer and October, typically Saturdays).
  • Support Offer Holder Events (January–April, typically Saturdays) by assisting with registration, demonstrations, set-up and clear-down, and providing excellent customer service.
  • Provide departmental tours, support talks, and share authentic insights into student life and studying within the Faculty.
Outreach & Engagement
 
  • Support outreach activities with schools and colleges, including on-campus competitions, masterclasses, and laboratory-based workshops.
  • Engage with visiting school groups and teachers, ensuring a welcoming and professional experience.
  • Where opportunities arise, attend external school and college visits to deliver talks and engage with prospective students
General Support
  • Assist in the smooth running of Faculty and Departmental events, as directed.
  • Undertake other ambassador-related duties as requested hiring manager.

  • Show good knowledge of Lancaster University, including departmental facilities, the campus, and the student experience.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently with a wide range of audiences.
  • Remain calm under pressure and work to defined schedules.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to work and adapt quickly to changing tasks.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Provide a friendly and professional experience to prospective students, parents, and teachers.
Commitment & Flexibility
 
Work is scheduled around academic commitments – your timetable will dictate which activities you can support.
The busiest periods for ambassador work are:
 
  • Offer Holder Events: February–April (Saturdays)
  • Open Days: Summer and October (Saturdays)
  • Outreach: Ad-hoc throughout the year.
