Advantage Africa supports people affected by poverty, disability and HIV to improve their education, health and incomes. Our work helps people to help themselves and build a better future for their families and communities.  

The Operations Assistant will contribute towards the development of Advantage Africa’s work to improve the lives and prospects of vulnerable people in Kenya and Uganda. They will research new projects, monitor existing ones and develop proposals, publications and online communications to support our fundraising and advocacy.  

Preferred Start Date: TBC from week commencing 2 March 2026

 End Date: 31 July 2026

 Interview Date: TBC weeks commencing 23 February or 3 March 2026

 Working Hours / Pattern: Flexible, according to availability, to be agreed with host up to a total of 70 hours

 Location:  Remotely (in the UK) with the option of some work onsite at the head office in Buckinghamshire if feasible

Job Description

The Operations Assistant will work within a small organisation of three experienced staff and a turnover of approximately £400k/year. Their work will involve researching new projects, monitoring existing ones and the development of proposals, publications to support the charity’s fundraising and advocacy. Specific duties could include: 

  • Building on the research project we have begun, with funding from the Joy Welch Post-Doctoral Grants Fund at Lancaster University, on educational provision for children with autism in Kenya. This could include developing materials and/or an advocacy plan and identifying potential funding sources to implement follow-on activities to ensure the research has a sustained practical impact.  
  • Furthering our research and mapping provision for people with epilepsy in Uganda as a precursor for Advantage Africa’s increased support of people affected, and identifying donors and future partners.  
  • Building on our research on teachers’ understanding of dyslexia in Kenya, creating materials and/or a larger proposal for a more extensive follow-on project for the current donor and others. 
  • Undertaking an analysis of the success of skin cancer surgery for people with albinism.  
  • Designing and implementing a survey of schools for children with disabilities in Kenya. 
  • Completing a mapping of prosthetics companies in Kenya. 
  • Other work suited to the intern’s skills and interests such as marketing, fundraising, making short videos and updating Advantage Africa’s website and Facebook page. 

Person Specification

Essential:  

  • Interest in international development and Advantage Africa’s life-changing work.  
  • Ability to work for a small organisation with relatively little supervision and on their own initiative.  
  • Research and analysis skills.  

Desirable:  

  • Knowledge of one or more of the vulnerabilities in which we work such as disability, autism, epilepsy, dyslexia, albinism or gender-based violence. 
  • Experience of working with an NGO or charity.  
  • Monitoring and evaluation. 
  • Fundraising and marketing.
