The School of Law is looking for a current Lancaster University postgraduate student to join the ‘AI for Legal Skills Training’ project team, on a flexible part-time basis from February 2026.

This is a pilot project assessing the impact on law students of using AI software to practise and develop two key oral legal practice skills - client interviewing, and courtroom advocacy.  The project team are working with an external partner who has adapted their AI software to create simulated legal practice scenarios for law students to engage with virtually.

The co-researcher role will support the project team in gathering and analysing data, preparing a research report, and any other project tasks as required.

Job Description

The AI for Legal Skills Training project team is gathering data from law students (through student surveys and a working group) to explore the impact of using AI software to develop their oral legal practice skills in courtroom advocacy and client interviewing. 

Co-researcher responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting the project team in the logistics of gathering data
  • Transcribing working group data
  • Undertaking quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Summarising relevant academic literature to support academic publications
  • Writing a research report

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Postgraduate student enrolled at Lancaster University
  • Excellent research skills to identify and summarise relevant academic literature
  • Strong data analysis skills with respect to both quantitative and qualitative data
  • Excellent written communication skills - ability to summarise and communicate complex information in a straightforward way
  • Excellent IT skills (including Microsoft Word, and appropriate data analysis software)
  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks and to manage time effectively to meet deadlines
  • Reliable, accurate, and organised.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

Desirable:

  • Able to explain why you are interested in the project and in this role.
