This role is open to current Postgraduate Research Students in the School of Law or with relevant academic legal experience. 

Title: Legal Academic Writing Skills (LAWS) Mentor

The School of Law is looking to recruit up to 4 postgraduate tutors to join our Legal Academic Writing Skills team for the 2025-26 academic year. Successful applicants will be working towards a postgraduate research qualification in Law and/or have studied law at undergraduate or Masters level and will work as part of a team of mentors offering legal academic writing support to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students on a one-to-one or small group basis, in person or remotely via Teams. Tutors will also have opportunities to develop and reflect on teaching skills and pedagogy individually, as part of a group and with the support of the LAWS lead.

While successful applicants must have a strong level of English and be successful in their studies, candidates must also demonstrate and awareness that this is a nurturing role, which requires self-awareness and reflection, empathy and consideration for others and their learning.

Job Description

The main tasks and responsibilities of the role are

  • Attend training sessions offered by the LAWS team
  • Offer one-to-one appointments to support undergraduate (LLB) or taught postgraduate (LLM/MA) students support with their legal academic writing skills.
  • Keep brief records of student consultations
  • Attend occasional meetings for debrief and reflection

Person Specification

LAWS Mentors will

  • Be working towards a postgraduate research qualification in Law or legal studies
  • Have previous experience of legal academic writing, e.g. through previous study
  • Have a good track record of academic study and a high standard of written and spoken English
  • Have good interpersonal skills
  • Be reliable and approachable
  • Be able to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students
  • Have a reflective approach, with an interest in academic, personal and professional development
  • Be willing to take direction and work within the guidelines of the scheme
