Role & Department Overview

The Student Wellbeing Partnership Service offers early intervention support to students to develop social networks, build their confidence and skills in managing their wellbeing, and help with access to university life.  The team offers a range of provision designed to support students, including 1:1 wellbeing advice, wellbeing projects, social events, workshops, and pre-arrival support.   

As a Wellbeing Ambassador you will work in partnership with the Student Wellbeing Service to help students build knowledge and understanding of student wellbeing services, and how to access support. You will offer knowledge, experience, practical and social support, information, tips and signposting on a range of wellbeing issues, through in-person peer support or activity and also through the development of digital resources and awareness campaigns. You will also be involved in creating content for social media and other online platforms.   

You will be required to complete a blend of online and in person training to undertake the role, and to engage in supervision to support you throughout the academic year.   

These roles are funded through widening participation and so we actively welcome applications from a wide range of students, including, neuro-diverse, independent students (care experienced, care leavers, estranged students), mature students, students with disabilities, international students, and Black, Asian, and Ethnic Minority students. 

Hours of work

Each ambassador is funded to provide up to 32 hours of engagement activity across the academic year. This will be delivered between 9-5pm, Monday-Friday throughout term-time, or as agreed with the Student Wellbeing Partnership Service.

The minimum availability requirement is 2hrs availability per week. Student wellbeing ambassadors can request to work above this requirement subject to agreement with the Student Wellbeing Partnership Service.

Job Description

Main responsibilities:
 
  • Providing knowledge, information and signposting to new students to support them to access relevant university opportunities and services.
  • Co-creating and featuring in video content for relevant wellbeing campaigns, including content for social media and other online platforms. These videos will cover a range of topics related to student wellbeing at Lancaster.
  • Co-facilitating social events and wellbeing workshops (with Student Wellbeing Advisors) which provide opportunities for students to connect with one another and practice wellbeing management skills.
  • Providing insights and feedback to the Student Wellbeing Advisors to inform and guide decision making within the Partnership Service, including service offer.
  • Reporting accurately and in a timely manner on activities undertaken to support supervision, service development and safe working practices
  • Attending and actively engaging with all training and supervision required by the role.
  • Acting as an ambassador for Wellbeing Services and the University, promoting its ethos and values, opportunities and services and working in line with Wellbeing Service policies and processes.
  • Providing 1:1 support to empower students to navigate the campus environment, build social networks, develop their knowledge and practical skills for university life (e.g. how to access / use laundry facilities, collect a parcel etc.), access university facilities to establish healthy routines (e.g. Student Union activities, Sport Lancaster etc.) access wider university services (e.g. Learning Development, Careers Service etc.)

Qualifications

  • Qualifications/ experience relating to mentoring or supporting others (desirable)
  • Qualifications/ training relating to supporting people with autism, mental health difficulties, and other disabilities (desirable)

Experience

  • Of the challenges of transition and study within university and an understanding of the unique experience of underrepresented student groups (essential)
  • Of supporting individuals in a supportive, coaching or mentoring capacity (desirable)
  • Of working with people with a variety of needs including those with disabilities, and experiencing social isolation (desirable)
  • Of creating video content and/or promotional material for use online (desirable)


Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others including adapting communication style to a range of audiences (for example staff, different student groups, and parents/guardians) (essential)
