As a university that values data-driven innovation, we are seeking to enhance how we generate insights from large-scale information to better understand patterns, performance, and outcomes.

This opportunity sits at the intersection of data and impact. Working within the Medical School, and supported by the Innovation team in ISS (Information Systems Services), you will play a key role in extracting meaning from complex datasets, helping academic and professional services colleagues make informed decisions.

We are looking to recruit a Data Insights Assistant to support a major project within the Medical School. The successful candidate will be responsible for organising and analysing large datasets using Excel, and supporting the translation of raw data into actionable insights. The work will focus on student experience, academic outcomes, and service improvement, and will involve working closely with Innovation Team and Medical School staff.
 
This is a full-time post – 36.5 hours per week with a degree of flexibility in the days that are worked on campus and from home.

Start Date: 4th August 2025

End Date: 24th October 2025

Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus

Job Description

Main responsibilities:
  • Working with large datasets related to medical education and student outcomes.
  • Preparing and cleaning data to ensure accuracy and consistency. 
  • Conducting analysis using Excel to identify patterns, trends, and key findings. 
  • Writing Excel Macros or scripts to automatize analyses.  
  • Creating charts, dashboards, and visual summaries to communicate insights. 
  • Supporting staff in interpreting results and applying findings to decision-making. 
  • Supporting the transition from Excel data management to Lancaster University databases. 
  • Collaborating with colleagues to scope and prioritise data tasks. 

Person Specification

  • Interest in healthcare, education, and using data to improve outcomes. 
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, macros, and data visualisation. 
  • Comfortable working with large and complex datasets. 
  • High attention to detail and ability to spot patterns, anomalies, and errors. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings to non-specialists. 
  • Organised and proactive, able to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision. 
  • Understanding of data protection and confidentiality principles, with the ability to apply them in day-to-day work. 
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to learn new data tools and techniques. 

    Desirable:
  • Good knowledge of one or more common computing languages (Python, R, SQL etc...).
