Would you like to spend three days this summer mentoring a group of Year 12 mathematics students?

The School of Mathematical Sciences at Lancaster University has been organizing Insight into University, a residential summer school for Year 12 mathematics students, every July since 2013. The summer school is organised in conjunction with EDT, the Engineering Development Trust:

Our student mentors play a key role at the summer school and we're looking to recruit six current Lancaster students, either undergraduate or postgraduate, to serve as mentors. Each mentor will work with a small group of Year 12 mathematics students, helping them achieve their best in a variety of short and long projects. The projects are designed to give the Year 12 students an insight into mathematics at undergraduate level.

The event runs from the afternoon of Monday 28 July 2025 to the afternoon of Thursday 31 July 2025.
 

Pay Rate: £17.09 per hour plus £2.06 holiday pay

Start Date: 28th July 2025

End Date: 31st July 2025

Job Description

You will be:
  • Mentoring a group of Year 12 students as they develop their mathematical summer school projects.
  • Facilitating the delivery of daytime and evening activities.
  • Assisting in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all those attending the residential summer school during their allocated shift, including any students with disabilities or additional support needs.
  • Adhering to all departmental and university policies and procedures including those relating to Safeguarding and Health & Safety.
  • Helping ensure appropriate behavior is maintained by students attending the summer school.
  • Reporting any issues that arise to staff coordinating the event.
  • Carrying out any other duties to support the running of the summer school.

Person Specification

Essential
  • A current undergraduate or postgraduate student at Lancaster University.
  • A clear and appropriate rationale for applying for this role.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to express information and ideas in a clear manner.
  • Be reliable, trustworthy and honest.
  • Be flexible and adaptable.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team whilst also having a strong initiative.
  • Have a friendly and positive approach to work.
Desirable
  • Studying in the School of Mathematical Sciences, on either a scheme administered by this department or a joint scheme to which this department contributes.
  • Experience of helping younger students understand difficult mathematical concepts.
  • Experience of working with young people.
  • Experience of service as a student ambassador at Lancaster.
  • An enhanced DBS certificate issued within the last three years.
Successful candidates will be asked to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
