The University has made significant investment in Sport Lancaster over recent years with the latest phase being a new 8-court badminton sports hall completed in June 2020 and now offering a truly outstanding Sports Facility.

The Sport Lancaster Team operate a purpose-built Sports Centre, facilitating our 8.5m climbing wall, multi-function Sports Halls, Swimming pool, sauna & steam room, 100 station Technogym Fitness Suite, Squash Courts. We also operate the University’s impressive Outdoor facilities including Rugby Pitches, 3G surfaces, Tennis courts and much more.

The Sports Centre is owned and managed by the University and is open to students across the UK, University staff and members of the local community. Sport Lancaster also proudly hosts several national events throughout the year.

We aim to inspire our customers to be physically active by creating a community which enables them to grow stronger, fitter and most importantly, more confident. Job Description

Job Purpose: To be responsive to member needs, being regularly available to provide help and advice in the climbing wall. To deliver group training courses and other related climbing services to an exceptional level. To ensure safe and effective working practices are in place which are delivered to an exceptional level of customer standards
 
Major duties:
  • To supervise the climbing wall and bouldering cave areas.
  • To provide security through observation of customers entering and leaving the climbing wall. Check membership cards and challenge unauthorized entrance to prevent inappropriate use of the area.
  • To carry out induction training and specific classes and workshops – to include schools, local organisations and holiday camps.
  • To advise on climbing techniques and movement styles.
  • To ensure that excellent customer service is delivered at all times.
  • Set bouldering problems and top rope routes.
  • To ensure the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained both in the climbing area and storage areas for equipment.
  • Promote health and safety and ensure procedures in the climbing wall are adhered to.
  • Ensure all users follow strict climbing wall etiquette.
  • To contribute to new ideas and make suggestions for the continual improvement of the services and procedures.
  • To ensure regular maintenance checks are carried out and defective equipment removed from use. Report any faults immediately to the Climbing Manager and/or Operations Manager (Facilities).
  • To attend all training and meetings.
  • Respond to emergencies and carry out first aid as required.  To adhere to the Sports Centre Climbing Wall Operating Procedures.
  • To ensure that all activities are operated in accordance with Equal Opportunities Legislation and Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • To undertake any other duties, not specified above that are appropriate to the level and responsibilities of the post, which may involve aiding in any area of the Sports Centre.
  • To assist the Climbing Manager when necessary which is reasonably incidental to the role.
 

Person Specification

The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
 
Essential Criteria
  • Possess a CWA, CWI SPA or RCI qualification.
  • Good understanding of health and safety issues affecting climbing walls including relevant PPE experience.
  • Route setting experience. 
  • Able to use appropriate climbing equipment and identify safety issues with such equipment. 
  • Good personal organisation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Possess a current first aid certificate. 
Desirable Criteria 
  • Possess a CWLA or CWDI qualification
  • Possess a RSA level 1 or 2 qualification 
  • Previous experience of a similar role in a customer focused environment. 
  • Possess a foundational and/or development coaching qualification
  • Experience of working with the public in a busy service environment ensuring that the experience of each customer is positive and satisfactory. 
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal and the ability to clearly demonstrate safe practical skills. Computer literacy
  • Effective team member with a flexible approach to work and colleagues. Experience of leading a small team of staff.
  • Commitment to undergo further training through operational requirements and personal staff development.
