This micro internship is for 30 hours in total (including 4 hours for training) and is aimed at students who have limited professional prior work experience and are looking for an opportunity that supports them to develop their employability skills. 

Eligibility 

To apply for this micro internship, students must be part of GROW Your Future. 

GROW Your Future is an opt-in scheme for UK undergraduates and postgraduate taught students who also meet specific Widening Participation criteria, e.g. students who are: 

  • first in their family to go to university
  • in receipt of a Lancaster Bursary
  • received free school meals or from a low participation neighbourhood 
  • over 21 when they start their first undergraduate degree
  • Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic 
  • disabled (including learning disabilities, physical or mental health conditions)
  • care leavers or have caring responsibilities, or estranged from family 
  • a refugee or asylum seeker, from a gypsy or Traveller community, or from a military family

As stated above, the GROW Your Future micro internship scheme aims to support students with limited professional work experience, therefore priority will be given to students who meet this criteria. This includes students who may have already completed a GYF micro internship. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to take part in a Commuting Student Research Micro Internship with the Student Success team. The Student Success team are looking for a reliable and hard-working student to conduct and report on research into the experiences of commuting students at Lancaster University and the barriers they face. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, with motivation to advocate for others. We are looking for a proactive student who will be willing to share their findings with university staff to further the development of support and programmes for commuting students, with an aim to establish the importance of sense of belonging.

Start Date: 16th June 2025

End Date: 31st July 2025

Interview Date: TBC

Working hours: 30 hours in total, hours are flexible and can be decided upon appointment 

Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus

 

Job Description

  • Formulate a plan for researching into Commuting Students at Lancaster University and their sense of belonging. This includes formulating research questions, research methods e.g. survey or focus groups, and participants.

  • When planning the research, consider and research other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and what support they provide for Commuting Students.

  • Reach out to Commuting Students and gain research participants, with the support of the Student Success Team.

  • Conduct research, considering current processes at Lancaster University, as well as external organisations.

  • Liaise and engage with Lancaster University staff, students and external institutions regarding commuting students and support. 

  • Present findings to Lancaster University staff, and create documentation to be used in future decision making and planning.  - - Undertake further general tasks informed by staff, or the intern's findings 

Person Specification

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of conducting research projects to be used for future decision-making.

  • Good communication skills, with experience of communicating with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Experience of producing documents/presentations for planning and evaluation.

  • Basic understanding and awareness of Commuting Students at university and the challenges faced.
