Role & Department Overview

The Library and Learning Development team are looking for two current students to join our team of Library Student Ambassadors 

The Library Student Ambassadors support a variety of library activity including Undergraduate Open Days, Offer holder days, Welcome Week, and other Library events. You will be the first point of contact for prospective students and guests, providing great quality Library tours and sharing positive experiences of, and enthusiasm specifically for the Library and Learning Development. 

The successful candidates will also participate in various working groups and projects across the library, which can be adapted and chosen based on their own interests. Previous Library Ambassadors have contributed to the following projects:

  • Our Library social media team, including contributing to meetings and creating content for Instagram, such as Instagram story takeovers and main feed posts.
  • Developing our Library Newsletter and writing content.
  • Contributing to the library academic integrity group to improve library services for students.
  • Contributing to library groups, such as the Library Management Team and Business Information and Communications Group, including attending student feedback carousels to get feedback on library social media and other communication channels.
  • Various recognition and Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity events.

Library Student Ambassadors will also receive career development support, including the opportunity to receive mentoring from Library staff and workshops with the university Careers Team.

Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour plus £1.47 holiday pay 
Start Date: 26th June 2025 
End Date: 31st June 2026
Interview Date: 13th June
Location: On campus or online
Work pattern: Variable, up to 10 hours per month. Most Library Ambassadors work around 8 hours a month as a guide. 

Job Description

  • To provide consistently great quality Library tours to prospective students and their guests;
  • To share positive experiences of, and enthusiasm for, Lancaster University and the Library and Learning Development and answer any questions visitors may have professionally and positively.
  • To support Library events and activity, such as welcome week, the library festival and other engagement events as required by the Library and Learning Development Team. This could include creating content for social media, contributing to Library projects and working groups and curating book displays and exhibitions.
  • To act as an Ambassador for the University, promoting its ethos, opportunities and services and enhancing its reputation at events.
  • To have good knowledge of Lancaster University and the Library and be able to share this knowledge with visitors;
  • To work as part of a team and lead by example, delivering consistently good service;
  • To attend compulsory training sessions where required;
  • Self-reflect on roles and opportunities undertaken within the library to identify development activities and initiatives.
  • Contribute to library strategic goals.
  • Any other duties as may reasonably be required by the Library & Learning Development team

Person Specification

 Education
  • Essential - Registered as a Lancaster University student in 2025/26 academic year.
Desirable Experience
  • Of being a user of the Library service at Lancaster University
  • Of working with staff, students, parents and members of the public

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work without supervision
  • Willingness to develop good knowledge of the Library and Learning Development service at Lancaster University and awareness of other student facing services within the University.
  • Desire and ability to work well in a team and demonstrate tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Willingness to work outside of your comfort zone and show flexibility
