The School of Mathematical Sciences at Lancaster University is seeking current Lancaster students to work as mentors at 'Crime Crackers', a one-day mathematics enrichment event for Year 9 students on Friday 13 June 2025. The event will take place in the Welcome Centre at Lancaster University from 9.30am until 2.30pm.
 
Please note: this is a one-day event and you must be available on Friday 13 June 2025.

Job Description

Main Responsibilities:
 
  • Mentor two or three groups of four Year 9 students as they tackle some mathematics problems.
  • Share their experiences of life as a STEM student at Lancaster University.
  • Assist in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all students attending the event, including any students with disabilities or additional support needs.
  • Adhere to all departmental and university policies and procedures including those relating to Safeguarding and Health & Safety.
  • Help ensure appropriate behaviour is maintained by students attending the event.
  • Report any issues that arise to staff coordinating the event.
  • Any other duties to support the running of the event.

Person Specification

The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
 
Essential
  • A current undergraduate or postgraduate student at Lancaster University.
  • A clear and appropriate rationale for applying for the role.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to express information and ideas in a clear manner.
  • Be reliable, trustworthy and honest.
  • Have a friendly and positive approach to work.
Desirable
  • Studying in the School of Mathematical Sciences, on either a scheme administered by this department or a joint scheme to which this department contributes.
  • Experience of helping younger students understand mathematical concepts.
  • Experience of working with young people.
  • Experience of service as a student ambassador at Lancaster.
  • Experience of giving a Lancaster campus tour to prospective students (some of those recruited may be asked to give a campus tour to some of the event participants).
  • An enhanced DBS certificate issued within the last three years (this is not required but if you have an enhanced DBS certificate then please mention this in your application).
Successful candidates will be serving as role models for the event participants.
