This opportunity is part of the Coastal Commissions, an AHRC-funded Impact Acceleration initiative co-led by Lancaster University and Morecambe-based arts organisation Deco Publique. The commissions bring together artists and communities to creatively explore the coastal landscapes of Morecambe Bay. 

In this internship, you will be embedded within a professional arts commissioning process, supporting an artist’s research and developing your own creative responses to the environment, communities, and cultural heritage of Morecambe Bay.

Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour plus £1.47 holiday pay
Start Date: TBC, likely w.c. 9 June 2025
Closing Date: 11 May 2025
End Date: 31 July 2025
Interview: TBC, likely w.c. 2 June 2025
Location: Mix of remote work, field visits, and in-person meetings
Working Pattern / Hours per week: Flexible up to a total of 70 hours

Job Description

  • Work closely with a commissioned artist to support their research process.
  • Undertake research on environmental and cultural aspects of Morecambe Bay through fieldwork, desk-based research, and library resources.
  • Assist in planning and participating in field visits (e.g. Barrow, Morecambe, Heysham).
  • Create a creative response to the research in any medium of your choice.
  • Collaborate with the artist and curator to present or document your work in progress.
  • Help organise and reflect on public engagement events linked to the commission. 

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:
  • Must be studying within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently.
  • A creative and open-minded approach to research and collaboration.
  • Willingness to travel to locations across the Morecambe Bay area (travel expenses covered).
  • Interest in environmental art, socially engaged practice, or site-specific work.
