Role & Department Overview

The University Library are looking for a 2nd Year student to join our team as our AM Digital Student Partner. You will be primarily responsible for promoting the AM Digital platform to Lancaster’s communities whilst supporting the engagement work of our Special Collections and Archives. This unique opportunity will enable you to gain valuable industry experience and skills in the process The successful candidate will work closely with both AM Digital and our Library staff to provide a comprehensive experience that bridges academic and industry practices.

The post is funded by AM Digital. AM is a specialist primary source publisher bringing history to life by digitising rare and fascinating materials from top libraries and archives around the world. The Special Collections and Archives support the teaching and research profile of Lancaster University by caring for and providing access to the diverse range of rare book and archive collections. The role will be based at the University Library, the heart of Lancaster’s community, local and global.  

The post holder will:

  • Gain practical experience promotion of archives and primary source collections. 
  • Gain practical experience of a wider range of engagement methodologies to promote heritage collections.
  • Build and enhance written and oral communication skills through outreach and promotional activities.
  • Enhance and develop analytical and research skills.
  • Network with professionals at AM Digital and gain access to mentorship opportunities.
  • Receive CV and interview preparation support from AM Digital and Lancaster University Employment and Recruitment Service.
  • Build a portfolio of work that highlights contributions to the development and promotion of archives. 
  • Have the chance to attend conferences and other academic events related to the post.

All travel and accommodation expenses for conferences and events will be reimbursed. Training for all duties will be provided.

Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour plus £1.47 holiday pay 
Start Date: 6 October 2025 
End Date: 26 June 2026
Working Pattern: 5 hours p/w (flexible, to be agreed upon with the hiring manager).

Job Description

The post holder will:
 
  • Conduct market research into how primary resources, especially those held at Lancaster or available via the AM Digital are used by our communities. The research will be presented as case studies with recommendations on how the use of primary resources could be more embedded in teaching and research at Lancaster. 
  • Represent The Library and AM Digital at conferences, fairs, and events to highlight the collections.
  • Develop and executing engagement strategies to promote wider engagement with the collection held at Lancaster and the AM Digital Collections available to our communities. This includes: 
    • Using digital engagement to increase awareness of the collections, including social media posts and podcasts.
    • Create an enhance subject guides to enhance discoverability of collections
    • Develop a peer led teaching session on using primary sources in research
    • Develop and promote at least one drop-in event in the Archive Research Centre on themes associated with Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity. 
    • Develop a physical exhibition based upon a theme from the AM Digital collections available at Lancaster related to materials from the Library’s own holdings.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Current Lancaster University undergraduate student who will be starting their second year in October 2025.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. 
Desirable
 
  • Familiarity with archives and rare books (advantageous but not essential). 
  • An initiative-taking, creative, and collaborative approach to problem solving. 
  • Curiosity about primary source materials and their value in teaching and learning. 
  • Knowledge of AM Digital and collections available at Lancaster.
