This micro internship is for 30 hours in total (including 4 hours for training) and is aimed at students who may not have had any professional prior work experience and are looking for an opportunity that supports them to develop their employability skills.
 

Eligibility

GROW Your Future is an opt-in scheme for UK undergraduates and postgraduate taught students who also meet specific Widening Participation criteria, e.g. students who are:

The Physics Department is in the process of revamping its web pages. In particular, this role is focused on the case studies on the business pages, which are unappealing, text heavy with a restrictive structure and out of date.

The role of this micro-internship is to assist in the creation of content, primarily text, but possibly including sourcing and/or selection of images, in cooperation with Prof Manus Hayne (Director of Business Engagement, Physics) and Ellen Greyling (Faculty of Science and Technology Engagement Team).

Pay Rate: £12.21 per hour plus £1.47 holiday pay
Start Date: 16th June 2025
End Date: 31st July 2025
Working Pattern: 30 hours total (flexible, discussed upon appointment)
Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus

Job Description

  • Engaging with individual (stakeholder) academics as a primary source for obtaining material for case studies.
  • Preparing short and simple texts for case studies.
  • Ensuring approval of text by stakeholder academics, Manus Hayne and Ellen Greyling.

Person Specification

  • An outstanding standard of written English, especially the preparation of short texts intended for a general audience (essential).
  • An ability to critically evaluate text from the point of view of a preferred target audience (potential industrial collaborators) and modify it accordingly (essential).
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that texts are factually correct (essential).
  • Excellent listening and note-taking skills (essential).
  • An ability to identify key points and ideas in a conversation and distil them into a short summary (essential).
  • An ability to cast technical details into terms that are accessible to a general audience (essential).
  • Excellent personal communication skills (essential).
  • Experience in (textual) web content creation, journalism or public engagement (desirable).
