Lancaster University: Don’t Ditch It (DDI) Project Coordinator 2025

The Don’t Ditch It (DDI) Project is a long-standing annual project at Lancaster University which aims to divert unwanted household items from disposal at the end of the academic year through the redistribution to charity partners and returning students.

This project is managed by the university’s Facilities department and project staff are managed by the Sustainability Team.

Start Date: 12th May 2025
End Date: 17th October 2025
Interview date: 1st of May 2025
Weekly hours: 21+ (split between two roles if necessary) per week
Location: On the Lancaster University campus

Job Description

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and coordinate the Don’t Ditch It Project 2025, ensuring efficient donation, collection, sorting and redistribution.
  • Report project progress to the Sustainability Projects Officer (Lancaster University).
  • Act as the main point of contact between the University’s Sustainability Projects Officer, student team and charity partners.
  • Develop and implement a rota that ensures efficient and cost-effective management of team resources.
  • Oversee the Eco-Hub and other on-campus sorting sites.
  • Support the marketing and promotion of the project, ensuring students and staff are aware of donation points and sustainability benefits.
  • Manage charity partner logistics, including booking and scheduling collections and all communications required.
  • Maintain accurate records of donation levels and impact for reporting and compliance reasons.
  • Supervise and support the Team Members. Ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety, manual handling and environmental policies.

Person Specification

The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:

Essential Criteria:

  • This position is open to current Lancaster University students who are studying towards or have completed a degree (or equivalent).
  • Strong leadership, planning and communications skills.
  • Passion for sustainability and Circular Economy principles.
  • Reliable, punctual and well-organised.
  • Available to work on-site throughout the summer term and vacation.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in project coordination or logistics.
  • Previous experience in working with charities.
  • Previous involvement in the Don’t Ditch It project
  • A UK driving license.
