Role & Department Overview

The Students' Union Events team is looking for eager and skilled Events Crew Technicians to join our exciting Events Crew. As an Events Crew Technician, you will play a key role in bringing unforgettable events and experiences to students at Lancaster. You will provide hands-on technical support for a wide variety of events including live shows and gigs, society and college events, and weekly club nights at The Sugarhouse.

You will be responsible for setting up, operating and maintaining sound, lighting and other AV equipment. Whether its managing stage transitions for artists at a gig or raising the roof with your lighting control at the Sugarhouse, your technical know-how and passion for great events will help create memories and experiences for fellow students. Some experience in sound, lighting or other tech in an events, live music or theatre context is desirable however, training will be provided on the job.

Please note, the rest of this academic year (Summer term) will be allocated for training and development and you will only be asked to pick up occasional shifts to shadow existing technicians and learn the role. Independent shifts will start from Welcome Week 2025 and you will be expected to be available for the 2025/26 academic year.

Job Description

Tasks will typically include:
 
  • Setting-up, operating and breaking down sound, lighting and AV equipment for event
  • Safely manual handling equipment while transporting, setting-up and breaking-down for events
  • Ensuring equipment is properly maintained, stored and accounted for after each us
  • Operating the lighting and providing tech support for club nights at the Sugarhouse
  • Working closely with the Events Team and other Crew Members to deliver high-quality technical support
  • Following all relevant health and safety regulations during event set-up and operation
  • Providing professional and friendly support to event organisers, artists, suppliers and attendees
  • Being a positive ambassador for the Students' Union and a point of contact for information

Person Specification

The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
 
Essential
  • Current Lancaster University student and available for work during the 2025/26 academic year
  • Some knowledge of sound, lighting, and AV equipment in any context
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work, including availability for evening, night and weekend shifts and a willingness to work popular events
  • Understanding of basic health and safety practices related to manual handling and electrical equipment
  • Passion for supporting high-quality events and experiences
Desirable
  • Experience working in a technical role within events, theatre or live performance settings
  • Experience using lighting control desks and software, particularly Avolites which is used for most of our events
  • Previous training in sound and/or lighting, health and safety or a related field
