This micro internship is for 30 hours in total (including 4 hours for training) and is aimed at students who may not have had any professional prior work experience and are looking for an opportunity that supports them to develop their employability skills.

Lancaster Medical School (LMS) is a thriving department with the Faculty of Health and Medicine and has two undergraduate degrees: MBChB Medicine and Surgery and the BSc in Sports and Exercise Science. The careers team is strongly aligned with the department and provides exceptional support, which we wish to further enhance, particularly to provide further opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research activities during their degree to inform their future career decision making and aspirations.

There are three research groups within LMS, that aligns with our diverse strengths: Centre for Health Informatics, Computing and Statistics (CHICAS), Experimental Medicine and the Interdisciplinary Network for Culture, Health, Ethics and Society (INCHES). Academic staff, research staff and postgraduate research students are each a member of a group.

Research activities to support research culture within the department include monthly research talks, a monthly research and engagement newsletter, writing retreats and an annual research away day.

The role of the intern is to support and enhance the research culture in the department and that of the medical careers, particularly in research experience. The intern will report directly to the Director of Research for Lancaster Medical School, with input from the Deputy Director of Research and the MBChB Careers Consultant.

Job Description

Duties may include:

  • Liaise with researchers within the Medical School to identify opportunities to develop research projects for UG students.
  • Contribute to the research culture initiatives by designing and planning activities for all staff and students. This may include monthly writing retreats, workshops, departmental talks, recording and editing podcasts.
  • Collating, organising and interpreting feedback from students, and developing research career opportunities in response.

Person Specification

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:
 
  • Strong interest in supporting medical research. Previous research experience is not essential as support will be provided, but a willingness to learn is essential.
  • An ability to work independently
  • Good critical and creative thinking skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • A thorough approach to collating and organising information
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Good written presentation skills
  •  Some understanding of academic research within medical careers, to be able to source suitable resources, and identify potential contacts to create a short series of research-focused podcasts
