The Department of English Literature and Creative Writing are looking for an experienced web editor and WordPress user to work on a flexible part-time basis to support the development of the ‘Shakespeare and His Sisters’ website, showcasing performances of early modern plays acted by both professionals and students studying at Lancaster University

Job Description

The Shakespeare and His Sisters website https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/shakespeare-and-his-sisters/ documents a range of site-specific performances of Shakespeare and other early modern texts at sites in the North West, including Lancaster Castle and Penshurst Place. This work is currently funded by a Lancaster University Impact Accelerator Grant which runs to 31st December 2024.

We are looking for someone with a background in web editing and website design, particularly in WordPress, to help to develop the site and showcase the work of the project.

Tasks will typically include:

  • Editing and uploading text and images from the ‘Henry V’ and ‘Love’s Victory’ projects
  • Selecting and editing video clips for uploading and creating stills
  • Developing site navigation to ensure that materials are organised and easy to find
  • Creating new pages for the site, including one on Shakespeare’s female contemporaries
  • Ensuring that content and site structure adhere to Lancaster University rules on accessibility and use of personal information
  • Ensure that content (e.g. images) are used in accordance with copyright rules and guidance.

Knowledge of Shakespeare and other early modern drama is not required for this role.

 

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Available to complete a total of 74 hours work between the start of the role and the end of the project on 31st December 2024
  • Excellent IT skills, including experience of web editing and web design
  • Experience of using WordPress
  • An understanding of rules and guidelines around website accessibility, use of personal information and compliance with copyright
  • Reliable and able to meet deadlines
  • A meticulous and organised approach to work
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision

Desirable Skills and Attributes

  • Familiarity with the works of Shakespeare and other early modern dramatists would be useful but is not a requirement
