Role & Department Overview

This work will contribute to ongoing significant investment in digital technology innovation with small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the northwest of England: The Centre for Digital Innovation (CDI, https://centrefordigitalinnovation.ac.uk/). As part of this project, you will work closely with an industry partner and receive support from the CDI team within the School of Computing that is working on R&D challenges that bridge between academia and industry.

We are looking for a creative and technically skilled 3D Designer and Software Developer to join our team on an exciting project that redefines how event spaces are designed and experienced. This role focuses on developing tools that allow users to create and customize virtual event spaces, including placing furniture and decorations in a digital replica of venues. You will be working with cutting-edge technologies like Blender or Unreal Engine to bring these virtual spaces to life.

This position is offered as part of a programme of opportunities for individuals and will be supervised by a member of the School of Computing CDI team. This opportunity is designed to give participants the experience of contributing to real-world research and development in collaboration with businesses.

Preferred start date: 2nd December 2024
 
Expected end date: 28th of February 2025
 
Weekly hours: 20 hours per week
 
Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campus 

Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Software Developer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about 3D Designing and Software development.
 
  •     Design and develop virtual 3D event spaces, focusing on customization and  interactivity.

  •    Build tools enabling users to place furniture, decorations, and layouts within digital doubles of  real-world venues.

  •      Collaborate with the team to refine user journeys and ensure seamless  functionality.

  •     Experiment with and integrate features that enhance the realism and usability of the  platform.

  •     Assist in creating visual elements that meet client needs for event planning  (e.g., weddings, conferences).

Person Specification

  • An interest in applied research and development, specifically in the development of new products.

  • Excellent communication skills are essential, both verbal and written.

  • An interest in the commercial application of R&D, especially with small to medium-sized enterprises.

  • Attention to detail with the ability to plan and work autonomously as well as integrate into a small team.

  • Excellent communication skills, and able to effectively communicate with a wide range of people.

  • Ability to assess and evaluate business requirements and convert them into technological solutions.

  • Competent IT skills.

  • Self-motivated and proactive.

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Competent Programming Skills.
