Role & Department Overview

The Law School is looking for law students from widening participation backgrounds to be School Tasking Ambassadors.

School Tasking Ambassadors will go into local primary schools to teach children about the law.

School Tasking Ambassador roles for law students from widening participation backgrounds (e.g. students from low income backgrounds, students of colour, students with disabilities etc).

School Tasking

The Law School is taking part in the successful national School Tasking initiative based on the popular Taskmaster TV series starring Alex Horne - Taskmaster TV

School Tasking involves law students teaching four sessions of law every fortnight to year 5 children (aged 9-10) in local primary schools where many of the children come from low-income households.  Children compete in teams within local heats, with winners selected to progress to a regional, and then a national final.  In the sessions, they learn a little bit about law, engage in some activities where they could put legal skills to good use, and then complete a Taskmaster-style task based around their learning.  Please see the video link for more information - Warwick University - School Tasking: a new approach to WP .

There are 15 Ambassador posts available and successful applicants will receive training on how to deliver the School Tasking sessions effectively, and how to make the most of the skills they develop while taking part, to improve their graduate career prospects.  Students will be paid for the time involved in campus-based training sessions and primary-school based delivery of School Tasking classes.

Department: Law School

Closing Date: 29th November 2024

Interview Date:   11th December 2024

Start Date: 13th January 2025

End Date:  31 July 2025 (although the main School Tasking sessions will run through Lent Term with the local final on campus in March 2025)

Hours: 24-34 hours, depending on which teams qualify for the different finals.

Duration: Training will start in January to support students delivering the School Tasking sessions once a fortnight over February and March.  Most sessions, including training sessions, are likely to run on Wednesday afternoons, although one school has requested sessions earlier in the week.  The local final will be on campus on April 26th.  The regional and national finals will take place between April and June, in which some Ambassadors may be involved if their teams get through.

Location: Training sessions will take place on campus.  School Tasking sessions will take place in local primary schools in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.  Transport costs will be covered.

The LU School Tasking Research Study

Successful applicants will be asked to complete two surveys (at the start and end of School Tasking) and to take part in a friendship interview at the end of School Tasking.  This will help the project team to identify the impact of School Tasking on law students who participate.
