Role & Department Overview

 The GROW Your Future team within Careers and Employability are looking for a current Lancaster University student, with a firm understanding of black heritage and the black student community on campus, to join the GROW Your Future (GYF) team on a flexible, part-time basis as a Black Student Community Ambassador.

This is an exciting and varied role that involves working with the GROW Your Future team to develop the GROW Your Future UK Black Student Stream. This is a new initiative for 2024-25 which aims to offer additional career opportunities and support to black students. The successful candidate will be an integral part of developing this new provision, supporting the GYF Careers Advisor to organise events and opportunities and create a community for students where they can network, share ideas and develop new skills. It is also an opportunity to develop and evidence a range of employability skills needed for any future career.

This role is part of a project supporting Black students into work. We particularly encourage applicants from communities with similar experiences or those who are passionate about addressing barriers to employment for underrepresented groups.

 

Pay Rate: £11.44 per hour plus £1.38 holiday pay

Start Date: 28th October 2024

End Date: 31st July 2025

Working Pattern: 3-5 hours per week

 

Job Description

 GROW Your Future (GYF) is a Widening Participation (WP) initiative designed to support students from underrepresented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds by providing a gateway to accessing additional targeted careers support and activity. GYF offers opportunities through a variety of initiatives and aims to be a supportive student community.

As a Black Student Community Ambassador, you will support the WP Careers Advisor to develop the GYF UK Black Student Stream. Tasks are likely to include:

  • Supporting with the development of the GYF UK Black Student Stream community, including building relationships with societies and other stakeholders across the university campus
  • Working collaboratively to organise events and activities for students who are part of the GYF UK Black Student Stream
  • Searching for opportunities and adding them to our dedicated GYF UK Black Student Stream MS Teams space and/or on GYF social media
  • Creating content that can be used to promote activities on social media
  • Gathering student feedback through focus groups and creation of questionnaires

Person Specification

 Essential:
  • Current student at Lancaster University
  • To have a firm understanding of black heritage and the black student community on campus
  • A member of the GROW Your Future Community (you can find out more and sign up via this link - https://portal.lancaster.ac.uk/ask/grow-your-future/ )
  • Strong face to face, electronic and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desire and ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Ability to provide effective administrative support, including good knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular use of Word, Excel, MS Teams, and Outlook emails
  • Competent Canva user
  • Able to create engaging content to communicate with students
  • Strong organisational and time management skills

Desirable:

  • Ability to use social media platforms, including Instagram and LinkedIn
  • An interest in and commitment to promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
