Role & Department Overview

The company: Simply Repair South Lakes holds monthly pop-up repair cafes where volunteer repairers help people to mend household items such as small electricals (including computers), small wooden items, toys, jewelry, clothing and other textiles. Repairers are keen to pass on skills, so 'customers' are encouraged to watch and learn, and sometimes have a go themselves. We also organise regular events such as seed swaps, clothes swaps and collect computers to be reused or those in need. We work closely with Waste into Wellbeing (making meals from 'rescued' food) who provide a meal for volunteers and visitors. Everything is provided on a 'pay what you can' donation basis. We dive deeper into repair skills through our (paid for) skills workshops. Simply Repair South Lakes is an unincorporated organisation hosted by Future Fixers CIC.

Project background

Simply Repair SL started in 2017 and since then have collected data describing the number/type of items repaired, Simply Repair SL would like to be able to use this data to put a value on their work in terms of carbon savings.

There are several benefits to the company having carbon data for it's regularly repaired items:

  •  Finding out the carbon savings of items repaired would help Simply Repair SL to focus on finding solutions for repairing items with the biggest carbon footprint and therefore save more carbon
  •  Encouraging more people to bring items for repair through marketing & communications surrounding the carbon savings.
  •  Encourage other communities to develop repair cafes and similar (a team member currently is working with other communities and is developing a 'how to' guide: a table of carbon-savings would be a great addition to this).
  •  Access more funding to develop more repair opportunities.
  •  It would also enable Simply Repair SL to encourage local councils to scrutinize items going to landfill and how more might be reused.
