We are looking for an enthusiastic Lancaster University student to undertake a full environmental impact analysis of a plastic-free face visor for use in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taylor Garfit Ltd is a product design and development company based in Preston, working across a wide variety of market sectors to provide bespoke design solutions tailored to a wide range of sectors including Automotive, Humanitarian Aid, Outdoor Sports, Medical and Packaging.
The majority of visors for PPE on the market are made primarily of plastic, with both a plastic headband and a plastic optic. Taylor Garfit recently received a grant from the government’s Innovate UK scheme to develop a new, environmentally friendly face visor. The face visor developed is entirely free of petroleum-based plastic, having a cardboard headband and cellulose optic. It will therefore be fully recyclable and compostable. 

Job Description

In this internship you would need undertake a full environmental impact analysis of the plastic- free visor in comparison to one or more selected competitive products. In principal this life-cycle analysis could cover all aspects of the product from cradle to grave including: raw materials, manufacturing, logistics and distribution, post-use disposal (including recycling and incineration).
Start Date: End of November.
Work Pattern/Duration: 140 hours available to complete the internship which can be worked flexibly to suit both the company and the intern. The internship will need to be completed by the end of the year as this is when the company plans to take the product to market.
This project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund to promote Low Carbon Innovation in the Region.

Person Specification

  • Knowledge of how to conduct a carbon life cycle analysis of a product from cradle to grave.
  • Experience working with carbon calculation.
  • Ability to find, work with and interpret data sets.
  • Ability to apply and compare data sets.
