Job Description
Do you have the passion to deliver the award winning Green Lancaster ‘#DontDitchIt, Donate It waste elimination project at Lancaster University? If you are enthusiastic about environmental sustainability and waste reduction, you have the opportunity to become a team member with the project this September!
 
Pay rate: £9.20 per hour (£8.21 + £0.99 holiday pay)
Working hours/pattern: Up to 20 hours per week
Start date: 9th September 2019 (training will take place on first day of work)
End date: 4th October 2019
 
We are seeking some candidates who are able to drive a small utility van for the project (requirement is 21 years or older with a clean drivers’ license). This is not a compulsory requirement of the role.
 
The role will involve working with other team members to deliver the #DontDitchIt, Donate It project during September and early October 2019. Team members will work closely with the ‘#DontDitchIt, Donate It’ Project Supervisor and the Students’ Union Development Manager (Environmental Sustainability) to ensure the project runs smoothly.Team members will be responsible for encouraging students to donate unwanted household items, collections and monitoring of donations and working with local charity partners. The team will also run a household items shop in Alexandra Square during Fresher’s Week.
  
Purpose of Job
 

To work on the ‘#DontDitchIt, Donate It’ project team and deliver the project during September/October 2019.

Job Specification

The successful candidates will:
  • Work with other team members and the '#DontDitchIt, Donate It' Project Supervisor(s) to promote the project to all students on campus, communicating the existence of the scheme along with what can/cannot be donated and promoting the benefits of the project in terms of the waste elimination, circular economy. and benefits to charity partners.
  • Provide safe assistance to residents in the sorting of items donated to the project at the dedicated collection and sorting stations across campus.
  • Assist charity partners with collections of pre-sorted donations at the main sorting base.
  • Monitor and record levels of donations on specific forms. 
  • Operate within the remit of the University’s’ Information Security Framework for administrative work and the Students’ Union Safe System of Work and Manual Handling guidelines during all practical work on the project.
  • Attend the training session on the first day of work.
  • Complete other comparable duties as designated by the line manager.
  • Uphold the students’ union environmental sustainability policies and to carry out any such other comparable duties as may be directed by the Chief Executive or their representative.
 
Person Specification
 
Essential:
  • Current student at Lancaster University or recent graduate
  • Previous experience and a keen interest in environmental sustainability projects, in particular the agenda of resources, waste, and the circular economy, having demonstrated active participation in student-led societies, projects, or campaigns on campus
  • Friendly and approachable with strong communication skills
  • Reliable, committed, and punctual
  • Work well in a team
  • Flexible to work lunchtimes, evenings, and weekends during term time and the summer vacation
Desirable:
  • Good knowledge of the '#Don'tDitchIt, Donate It' project, and the contributions of the Lancaster University Students' Union and Lancaster University to the Green Lancaster initiative
  • Hold a UK driving licence
