Job Description
 The Politics, Philosophy, and Religion department are recruiting Summer School Ambassadors to help run evening activities at the New Political Minds Summer School 2019.
The New Political Minds Summer School is a prestigious event run to help inspire successful applicants to Lancaster’s Politics programmes. The event will run from 28th to 30th August 2019. You can find out more information about the event here:
Your role as a Summer School Ambassador will be to assist with running and organising evening activities from Summer School attendees. You will also be responsible for their safeguarding overnight.
Pay rate: £8.21 + £0.99 holiday pay = £9.20 per hour


You must be available to work the following overnight shifts:

Wednesday 28th August, 4:00 pm – Thursday 29th August, 9:00 am

Thursday 29th August, 5:00 pm – Friday 30th August, 9:00 am

On-Campus accommodation and all meals are provided.


Job Description:

  • Be the first point of contact for summer school attendees during evenings.
  • To assist in the coordination of, and to facilitate the delivery of evening activities.
  • To ensure appropriate behaviour is maintained by students attending the summer school.
  • To report any arising issues to staff coordinating the event. 
  •  Stay overnight with, and supervise students in on-campus accommodation.
  • Guide students to sessions according to their schedule, e.g. take students to first session after breakfast, and collect students at 5pm after last workshop.
  • Motivate, engage with, and enthuse groups of students
  • Encourage interaction between students from various backgrounds.
  • To assist in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all summer school students attending the residential, during the allocated shift times, including any students with disabilities or additional support needs.
  • To adhere to all departmental and University policies and procedures including those relating to Child Protection and Health & Safety.
  • Any other duties to support the running of the summer school.


Student Ambassador Person Specification:

  • Current student at Lancaster University or graduated from Lancaster University in the last two years.
  •  Can plan and run social activities, with ability to prioritise workload and work on own initiative.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to relate to, and communicate effectively with, students and young people from different cultures.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and honest.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team whilst also having a strong initiative.
  • Able to take a friendly and positive approach to work.
  • Experience of working with young people.
